The U-E golf program celebrated a new milestone with the official unveiling of the Hurst Mitten U-E Golf Practice Facility, honoring a longtime educator, coach and student advocate whose impact on Union-Endicott continues today.
Hurst Mitten served as a U-E guidance counselor from 1965 until his retirement in 1994. He also left an impressive legacy as the U-E golf coach, leading teams to STAC championships in 1970, 1972, 1974 and 1978, a Sectional Championship in 1972, and New York State Team Championships in 1972 and 1973. In 1977, U-E also produced an individual state champion under his leadership.
More than the championships, Mitten was remembered for his dedication to students and his commitment to the community. His son, Tim Mitten, attended the dedication and shared the history of his father and golf at U-E.
The new practice facility will give U-E golfers additional opportunities to develop their skills, including putting, chipping and accuracy, without needing to be on a golf course.
Following the unveiling, the team held a closest-to-the-pin contest, with a $50 gift card donated by Tim Mitten. Congratulations to Lee Olenski!
U-E extends its appreciation to the Mitten family for their generosity and support, as well as the Board of Education and district leadership team for their continued support of U-E student-athletes.
The Hurst Mitten U-E Golf Practice Facility will serve not only as a place to develop young golfers, but as a lasting reminder of a coach, educator and student advocate who made a difference in the lives of generations of U-E students.
