As the school year begins, an important conversation is also taking place across New York State about the future of education. Families may have seen recent coverage regarding the New York State Board of Regents’ update on NY Inspires. NY Inspires represents New York State’s developing direction toward a more competency-based model of education, in which students demonstrate not only what they know, but also what they can do with what they have learned.
It is important to emphasize that NY Inspires is a plan and direction, not yet a final regulatory proposal. There are no immediate changes to New York’s graduation requirements. U-E students will continue to follow the current requirements for credits, courses, and assessments. At the same time, New York State is beginning the next phase of exploring how competencies, learning standards, and demonstrations of learning could shape education and graduation requirements in the future.
At Union-Endicott, this conversation aligns closely with work already underway. Last year, the district developed its own Portrait of a Graduate, identifying the attributes U-E wants students to develop as they prepare for life after high school. These include:

The district is focusing particularly on Academically Prepared and Reflective and Future-Focused, while continuing to develop all six attributes throughout a student’s educational experience.
Helping Every Student Find Their Pathway
U-E’s goal is not to create one pathway for every student. There is not one definition of success, and there is not one path to a successful future. Some students will pursue college. Others may enter the workforce, military, apprenticeships, technical programs, entrepreneurship, or other pathways. Many will take a combination of these routes throughout their lives.
The district’s responsibility is to help every student discover their interests and strengths, challenge them with meaningful learning, provide the support they need, and help them see possibilities for their future.
This work is reflected in the district’s four priorities:

Academic Rigor and Multiple Pathways
Mental Health and Student Supports
Student Engagement and Accountability
Together, these priorities help create an educational experience that prepares students not simply to graduate, but to be ready for what comes next.
Examples of this work can be seen every day throughout U-E. Students are applying what they learn to real-world challenges, working collaboratively, developing creative solutions, communicating their ideas, and learning to reflect on their experiences.
One recent example involved students from TJW Elementary and UEHS who worked together to develop a technology-based accommodation that allowed a young student, Sebastian, to play his musical instrument. Through that experience, students were not simply completing an assignment. They were applying academic knowledge to solve a real problem that mattered to another person.
That is the kind of learning U-E wants for its students.
All Means All
As the district looks toward the future, it remains committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
That means providing the accommodations, supports, opportunities, and high expectations necessary for every student—including students with disabilities and English Language Learners—to demonstrate what they know and can do.
U-E is not starting from scratch. The district already has strong programs, dedicated educators, multiple pathways, career-connected learning opportunities, mental health and student supports, and countless opportunities for students to discover their interests and develop their strengths.
As New York State continues its work around NY Inspires, Union-Endicott will continue building on what has already begun. The district will listen to educators, students, families, and the community while keeping its work focused on what matters most: preparing students for their futures.
Every Student Has a Story to Write
Every day, across every classroom and every building in Union-Endicott, students are writing their own stories and shaping their futures.
The district’s job is to help students discover their strengths, open doors for them, challenge them and, perhaps most importantly, believe in what they can become—especially when they may not yet believe in themselves.
That is the work of the Portrait of a Graduate.
That is the work of the strategic plan.
And ultimately, that is the work of Union-Endicott.
U-E has an incredible responsibility, but also an incredible opportunity. The experiences created, the relationships built, and the belief shown in students can change the trajectory of a young person’s life.
