The Sled Dogs of Smokey Hill brought an unforgettable burst of excitement to the CFJ first graders on Monday, March 9th. Dale and Mary Pitcher, joined by a team of dedicated Siberian Husky trainers, whisked us into the thrilling world of the 1,000 mile Iditarod—famously known as “The Last
Great Race on Earth.” Students got to meet the huskies up close, slip on a real musher’s mitten, and discover incredible facts about the brave dogs who tackle the icy trail each year.
Back in the classroom, the adventure continued as students wrote informational pieces about the huskies and crafted opinion writing about their favorite parts of learning about the Iditarod. With the race kicking off this past weekend, we’ve even been
tracking the mushers and their teams in real time, cheering them on from our desks.
This cross curricular unit has been a thrilling experience for both teachers and students, blending history, writing, science, and a whole lot of wonder.
