Mrs. Alana Ackley’s fifth grade class and Miss Courtney Hine’s first grade GFJ class recently teamed up for a hands-on Valentine’s Day science collaboration that brought learning to life.
Students worked in mixed-grade pairs, giving fifth graders the chance to step into leadership
roles while guiding and encouraging their younger partners. The cross-grade format created a supportive environment where students could learn from one another and build confidence
together.
The classes conducted a festive experiment using candy hearts placed in different liquids to see how each fluid affected the candy. Students made predictions, carefully recorded their observations, and discussed why the hearts reacted differently depending on what they were placed in.
They also explored chemical reactions by combining egg whites, baking soda, and vinegar, watching firsthand how ingredients can change when mixed together.
Both classes enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate and are looking forward to partnering again for future activities and shared learning experiences.
