students in balloon

Fourth and fifth grade students at GFJ enjoyed a memorable hands-on learning experience when Balloons Over Letchworth visited the school. The presentation introduced students to the history of hot air balloons and the science behind how they fly. Students also learned how balloons are steered, how pilots manage takeoff and landing, and what it takes to become a licensed balloon pilot.

The balloon was inflated inside the school gym, where students listened attentively to the presenter in hot air balloonand asked thoughtful questions. The most exciting moments came when students were able to step inside the actual balloon, known as the envelope, and later head outside to see the basket up close and watch the burners in action.

The learning continued throughout the day as teachers incorporated hot air balloon themes into lessons across the curriculum, from literacy centers to science class.

This engaging experience was made possible through grant funding and the continued support of the GFJ PTA.
