painted pots

Keiren Pross’ third-grade class at GFJ recently turned a classroom project into something potsmeaningful and memorable—just in time for Mother’s Day.

The students created personalized flower pots from start to finish, combining creativity, science, and care. Before the painting began, they dove into a mini science unit focused on spider plants, learning what makes these hardy, air-purifying houseplants special.

Once they understood the "why" behind the plant, it was planted potstime to get artistic. Each student painted their own pot with bright colors, heartfelt messages, and hand-drawn designs. They then learned the basics of potting a plant, including how much soil and water spider plants require, and how to help them grow strong roots.

The final step: planting their spider plants and preparing to take them home, each one a hand-crafted gift for a special person in their life.

This project was more than just a fun activity. It gave students the chance to apply science knowledge in a hands-on way, practice fine motor skills through painting and planting, and reflect on the importance of giving. And, of course, it brought big smiles to the faces of the people who received their thoughtful, living gifts.

Projects like this are what make learning at GFJ both meaningful and memorable.
