The New York State of Poetry (NYSP) program introduced more than 5,000 students from 59 high schools across every region of the state to the craft of poetry, encouraging them to read widely and write their own original work. From these efforts, 33 poems were selected for inclusion in a statewide anthology.

Among those selected is a poem by Tiger Ventures senior Cadence Trinidad, who will perform her work live on April 18 at the Guggenheim Museum’s Peter B. Lewis Theater.

NYSP aims to help students engage with poetry by first exploring a curated collection of poems. Each student then chooses one piece that resonates with them and writes a response. These responses can take different forms, including direct replies, “after” poems, golden shovel poems, or other styles inspired by the original work.

Cadence’s poem, titled “Grief is a Shock Collar,” draws inspiration from “Hope is the thing with feathers,” by Emily Dickinson.

In addition to her talent as a poet, Cadence is also a member of the varsity wrestling team, where she has competed at both sectionals and the state level.

Cadence was interviewed on WBNG's Around the Tiers. Click here to see the interview.

The first New York State of Poetry anthology will be released online on May 18.
