At JFS Middle School, care for one another isn’t just talked about. It shows up in quiet, meaningful ways.
Over the last several weeks, students have been working on a project called Healing Hearts. During lunch enrichment and approved free periods, they’ve been heading to the library, where a sewing station is set up with felt, thread, stuffing, and simple patterns. Students sit together, thread a needle, tie knots, and carefully stitch small, hand-held hearts.
The hearts themselves are simple. Soft fabric. Bright colors. Small enough to fit in a pocket. The purpose behind them is what matters.
Once completed, the hearts were delivered to guidance counselors. From there, they will be
shared with students or staff members who are grieving the loss of a loved one. It’s a small gesture, but a powerful one. In moments when words can feel hard to find, a handmade heart becomes a quiet way to say, “You’re not alone. We’re thinking of you.”
What makes the project especially meaningful is how it brings the school community together. Students from different grades and friend groups sit side by side. Some come because they enjoy
sewing. Others come because they want to help. All leave knowing they’ve contributed to something bigger than themselves.
Healing Hearts is a project of connection, empathy, and shared purpose. In every stitch, students learned that kindness doesn’t have to be big or loud to matter. Sometimes, it fits right in the palm of your hand. Click here to see more photos
