Congratulations to UEHS technology education teacher Tom Palazzo who was named Regional Teacher of the Year by the Southern Tier Technology and Engineering Educator’s Association.
Palazzo has taught at UE for 17 years. He currently teaches high school transportation systems, land transportation, CNC machining, metal fabrication, engineering design and development, and 8th-grade Tech at Tiger Ventures.
He has participated in the following extracurricular activities: SADD advisor, Mock DWI Crash advisor, After-Prom Party volunteer, School Safety committee, and GED/TASC teacher. He is currently designing and implementing a Maker Space at the new Tiger Ventures XQ School.
In the spring of 2018 as the Mock DWI crash adviser, he coordinated and oversaw this intense program, which involved dozens of emergency services personnel, high school students and the landing of a helicopter at Ty Cobb Stadium.
Outside of teaching, he has been an EMT for 16 years, a Broome County Fire and Arson Investigator for five years, and a firefighter for the past 18 years at Endwell Fire where he is currently the fire chief.
Palazzo will be honored with fellow technology educators from around the state at a ceremony in March held at the Museum of Science and Technology in Syracuse.
UEHS principal Steve DiStefano said, “Mr. Palazzo connects with a wide array of students in and outside of the classroom. His hands-on approach gives our students an authentic experience through which they find success, not only here and now at UE, but also in their futures.”
