Students at Tiger Ventures who are participating in the Garden and Greenhouse Project got some hands-on experience in grinding corn.
Working with retired UEHS science teacher Dr. Tim Newton, students learned how cornmeal is made. Dr. Newton, using his family’s vintage corn sheller, demonstrated how to operate it and then gave students the chance to grind corn. Dr. Newton’s “corn sheller” is from the 1920s and still works like it is brand new!
Part of this work is learning
about the process of farm-to-table. Students will be bringing that ground corn to the table as they use it to make many varieties of cornbread. Stay tuned!
