Congratulations to senior Johnny Rockwell on receiving his Eagle Scout. His project was to improve the cross-country course located at AGM.
Johnny designed, built and installed a large permanent structure to display weatherproof course maps for runners and hikers. This sign also will serve as a memorial for former head coach Larry Hynes, who passed away in 2009 after more than 40 years of coaching our running Tigers cross-country team.
He then widened and improved accessibility, adding spectator trails to see runners compete.
He established new, brightly painted on course trail signs, which included installing in-ground holders.
Johnny said the project took over 145 hours of work with 60 of those hours going into planning, design and meetings.
The course was ready for the fall 2019 Conwicke Stock meet and the STAC championship. Johnny said, “Over 40 volunteers helped over several days in August and I hope these improvements will serve our Tiger runners as well as runners from other schools, and community members who enjoy running and hiking for years to come.”
After graduation in June, Johnny plans to major in creative writing/screenwriting. He has applied to Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars, Syracuse University and Binghamton University, among others.
