French Club celebrates holiday

French Club sponsored a party on February 1 to celebrate Chandeleur, a French holiday that falls on February 2.

This holiday is like Groundhog's Day in the U.S. If it is sunny on Chandeleur, then there will be six more weeks of winter. If it is cloudy, winter will end soon. The French eat crepes to celebrate as the thin pancake, which is round and golden, is said to symbolize the sun and its return after the darkness of winter.

In the Middle Ages people would bring their household candles to the church to be blessed for the coming year. This contributes to the British name for this holiday: Candlemass.
