Students send valentine cheer to vets

Students with cards JFS seventh-grade social studies teacher Amanda Atkinson recently launched an extra credit opportunity for her students to bring some Valentine’s joy to local veterans, which quickly blossomed into a school-wide project.

Atkinson feels it’s important to incorporate community service projects into the curriculum. She shared her idea with other staff members and within a couple of weeks, more than 200 homemade valentines were collected for area veterans.

The program, Valentines for Veterans, was sponsored by Congressman Anthony Brindisi throughout the 22nd Congressional District. The purpose was to show our appreciation to veterans by creating handmade Valentine’s Day cards.

Atkinson said, “This type of community service event is important for students to under citizenship, their role in society and also how to say thank you to all those who have sacrificed so much for us.”

Thank you JFS!
