Careers, salaries, budgets studied in middle school

game wheels
How much will you make? What does that get you for a house, a car, travel, and living expenses? These and many other questions were answered in Cristin Herr's sixth-grade Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS) class when they worked with "Claim Your Future" game kits.

The unit is designed to engage students in learning about the connection between careers and finances in hopes of giving them a better understanding of the relationship between their current and future choices as well as the education and training opportunities they will have after high school.

Students examined 50 “Claim Your Future” Career Wheels.  For each wheel, they determined the annual income, monthly income (after taxes, insurance, and student loans were paid), as well as the education level required of the job of their choosing.  Using the wheels, students made financial choices on such expenses as food, housing, transportation, communication plans, personal care, cable, video games, clothing, entertainment, charitable giving, pets, and meals out.

Students were enlightened as they came to realize that financial opportunities were dependent upon their level of education and/or training. Many conversations and questions arose.

The “Claim Your Future” Game Kits, published by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), were purchased through a grant provided to the JFS FCS Department through the Union-Endicott Education Foundation (UEEF.)

Many thanks to FAME and to the trustees and members of UEEF for providing this valuable opportunity to our students.
