Zoo visit inspires learning

Student pets an animal from the zoo
Students in Kelli Krieger's Creative Writing class spent some time with staff from the Ross Park Zoo Mobile and a few of their amazing critters. As a way to change up the routine, Krieger invited the zoo to bring a few of their animals to UEHS. While the students will be assigned a writing assignment tied to the visit, it was also designed to bring a different learning opportunity outside the classroom.

Zoo staff talked about the different animals they brought with them, including a parrot, a chinchilla, a gecko and a milk snake. Students learned about their habitats, how they live and survive in the wild as well as each animal's name. Students will write a creative, inspirational story about one of these animals.

And, one of the zoo staff is UEHS Class of 2013 graduate Michelle Knuepfer. Michelle graduated from St. Lawrence University with a degree in conservation biology and is currently interning at the zoo.

This activity was a fun way for students to learn something new, have some laughs and take a break from their regular class routine.
