It is National Agriculture Day and students in Tiger Ventures went to work learning how to grow tomato plants from seeds with Tiger Ventures incubator partner, AgZeit.
As part of a community-based service project, the students will grow four different varieties of tomato plants over the next few months, watering and caring for them. Once germinated, the plants will be donated to VINES Binghamton Urban Farm.
The project officially began on March 20, designated as National Agriculture Day, when students planted seeds from AgZeit, in trays of dirt. Two new grow units specifically designed for tomato production were added to one of the grow rooms in the incubator wing at Tiger Ventures.
In late May, early June, the students will continue with the care of the tomato plants, including plants that have been set aside for them to take home and care for and harvest over the summer.
Once the plants are mature a day will be scheduled for VINES to take them and use for their program.
