As a way to raise awareness about suicide and talk to our young teens about emotions and mental health, JFS Promise Zone once again sponsored a Spoon Tournament. Spoons is a fast-paced game played with an ordinary pack of playing cards and several ordinary kitchen spoons. It is designed to be an engaging way to bring suicide awareness to young teens.
The elimination-style tournament was broken up by grade and the students played during their lunch periods. Students in each grade competed against one another in small groups and the last two finalists from each grade won a big prize with all players receiving a small prize.
Staff from the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier came to speak on behalf of the Do It for Daron Initiative regarding the story of Daron who committed suicide as a young teenager. They spoke about emotions, that mental health is as important as physical health, and where to go for help.
