Students sit in the hallway with a white table in the center. Local veterans are introduced and they briefly talk about their service in the military. Then the book, “America’s White Table” is read by teachers. While the book is read, the local veterans participate in placing special items on the white table.
After the book is read, students, throughout the day, place thank you cards or letters on the table, which are collected at the end of the day and sent to local veterans.
Teachers reread the book in class and discuss the purpose of Veterans Day and why it is observed as a holiday. It also teaches students about different traditions they may not be aware of, and the meaning behind the symbols placed on the table.
It is a very touching way to honor the men and women who have served our country. Teacher Katy Haus said, “The students respond very well to the event and are extremely respectful of the table as it sits out all day. “
