BackPack program underway
The Food Bank of the Southern Tier made its first BackPack Program delivery to U-E. The program provides nutritious, kid-friendly food for students over the weekends and during school breaks.
A bag of food that contains at least eight items, which includes two proteins, two grains, two dairy, and two fruits or vegetables is provided by the Food Bank. These are delivered each Friday to the four elementary buildings and given to participants in the program. About 170 students benefit from this program.
On hand for the first delivery were U-E Assistant Superintendent Nicole Wolfe, Broome County Executive Jason Garner, BOCES Food Services Director Mark Bordeau and representatives from the Food Bank.
A representative from the Food Bank said, “By providing children who are at risk of hunger with a bag of nutritious food each Friday throughout the school year, the BackPack Program attempts to reduce this gap and help children return to school on Monday ready to learn.”
