The district is excited to announce that UEHS has been accepted to participate in the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness pilot program for the 2021-2022 school year.
Effective civics education prepares students to better understand the issues that are important to them and their communities, as well as the processes by which public policy decisions are made in our constitutional republic. It enables students to understand diverse perspectives and means of resolving differences in a civil and productive manner. Additionally, it helps students develop conflict resolution and critical thinking skills so important to engaged civil discourse. Students also learn how to demonstrate respect for the rights of others, respectfully disagree with other viewpoints, and provide evidence for a counterargument. Civic education can strengthen the relationships of schools and students with parents, families, civic leaders, and organizations, and community partners.
Sarah Miller, curriculum director (6-12), was instrumental in the application process and facilitating the work required to apply for the pilot program. She added, “I’m very excited to collaborate with our staff and community to help our learners demonstrate their readiness to engage with challenges in our interdependent world!”
The state has set forth criteria for demonstrating civic knowledge and participation, which include research projects, work-based learning, and capstone projects. Students can begin working toward their seal in middle school. Any student who earns the seal will have that noted on their transcripts and will earn the Seal of Civic Readiness on their diploma.
As a pilot program participant, UEHS will be assigned a liaison from the State Education Department who will work with the high school throughout the 2021-2022 school year. Click here
