UE grad named coach of the year
Class of 1996 UE graduate Bill Vanderrest has been named the 2017 Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) Outstanding Coach of the Year in Girls Track. Coach Vanderrest has been the head boys and girls outdoor track coach since 2000. Bill is currently the longest tenured track and field coach in Coventry High School history. He has an overall record of 262-120-2, a .671 winning percentage.
Throughout his tenure, Bill has taught several NCCC conference champions, four state champions in shot put, three state champions in javelin, and one state champion in the hammer throw. One of his athletes achieved all New England recognition in the shot put and javelin and was ranked as high as the #2 javelin thrower in the nation.
Coach Vanderrest has coached a number of student-athletes who went on to compete in college and his teams have consistently been ranked in the top 10 in the high school state rankings.
Coach Vanderrest has served on numerous committees throughout his coaching career. This includes the CHSCA Outdoor Track & Field Committee, the CHSCA All-State Banquet Committee, the NCCC Rules Interpretation Committee, and the NCCC Games Committee. Bill is also a Level 1 USATF Certified Track & Field Coach.
In addition to coaching outdoor track, Bill has been a football and indoor track coach at Coventry High School.
