Students in Deb Darlings science class at JFS will start the year off studying honey bees or, more specifically honey bees that turn to zombees after being attacked by a parasite.
Zombee watch (Zombeewatch.org) is a national organization that is collecting information on the presence of a Zombie Fly parasite. The female fly lays her eggs inside a living honeybee and as the bee dying it behaves in a zombie-like fashion.
Darling is asking families to send in any dead honeybees that they find in a resealable container along with the information of when and where the bee was found. Then, students will observe the bees for two weeks to determine if they were infected. All results will then be sent to Zombeewatch.org.
