Students learn from professionals

Students talk with an area professional about his career. Having the opportunity to meet and talk with professionals can set the right tone for students who may be unsure of what direction they want to go. To help some of our UE students find that direction, student members of JFS Brother to Brother and UEHS The Squad spent a couple of hours with area professionals as part of both clubs’ second Job Fair.

The fair came about after students expressed an interest in seeing and meeting professionals who look like them. The job fair provided this unique opportunity to have a room full of such professionals and was a perfect way to start off the school year.

During the fair, students rotated to different professionals who discussed their careers, levels of training, educational requirements, and why they chose their career path. They asked the students what they were interested in and talked about valuable life lessons, such as working hard, asking for help from others, and networking, which fostered some great discussions.

Kyle Wolf, The Squad adviser, said he hopes this exposure to minorities who have successful careers in various professions shows our young men that anything is possible. He said, “There is something there in terms of our students seeing successful men who look like them talk about shared life experiences and what it takes to be successful, putting in the time and effort, working hard, and learning from mistakes.”
