UEHS Food & Cultures Class |
 |
 |
 |
 |
The Food and Cultures class at U-E High School has been busy this year studying and sampling food from across the world.

Class sitting down to an Irish meal
Mrs. Rathfon said they welcomed two speakers recently: Cheryl Naslund, who presented a program on Argentina and Frank Roma, a UE graduate who presented a program on his many work related trips to Russia for consulting on their power plant facilities. Each speaker brought a new dimension to what local life is like for citizens of these countries.

Argentinian Meal
In addition, the class prepared menus with food from: Thailand, Madagascar, France, Argentina, Australia, and Ireland. |

Mrs. Appel's first grade class at Charles F. Johnson spent May 2 harvesting fresh vegetables from the hydroponic garden in their classroom and preparing a delicious lunch.

Lunch included scrambled eggs with fresh dill, a lettuce salad, and a main course of rice with parsley and cilantro.

The hydroponic garden was started with funds from a Union-Endicott Education Foundation Innovations Grant (more info about the UEEF can be found HERE). This was the second harvest for the class; they grew pesto in the fall. |

Twelve Union-Endicott High School students spent three weeks in Italy as part of the district's Italian Exchange Program.
The students left for Bolzano, Italy on April 1 and returned on April 20. Besides staying with their host families in Bolzano, the students also visited Florence, Venice, and Rome. This was the 30th year of the exchange program between UE and Bolzano and it was celebrated with stories in the local newspapers and a television interview. The school in Bolzano even flew the American flag in front of the school for the three weeks that the UE students were in town.
Here are the students who attended: Donna Cimini, Cassie Conrad, Delaney Dupuy, Liana Hall, Nick Henenlotter, Aurora Hollenbeck, Erin Koral, Calli Nedbalski, Andrew Newman, Brianna Sullivan, Sam Sylvester and Liz Thompson. UEHS Italian teacher Mr. Angelo De Michele was the group's chaperone.
