U-E voters approve 2012-13 budget Voters in the Union-Endicott Central School District overwhelmingly approved the proposed budget for the 2012-13 school year on May 15, with 1,395 YES votes (71.1 percent) to 567 NO votes (28.9 percent), accordingly to preliminary numbers (paper ballots won't be counted until later). A second resolution, to purchase two 65-passenger diesel school buses and one 34-passenger gas bus for an amount not to exceed $267,000 also passed, with 1,406 YES votes (73.3 percent) to 513 NO votes (26.7 percent). Two candidates were running for one, five-year term on the U-E Board of Education. Kathy Marecek (incumbent) received 953 votes, while Greg Diaferio received 872. Again, all results are preliminary. Universal Pre-K and Kindergarten Registration Union-Endicott will take information about interested UPK students for the 2012-13 school year through May 31. Six students' essays picked as winners |

Six Union-Endicott sixth grade students and one parochial student have been honored by the Endicott Sertoma club as local winners of the National Heritage Sixth Grade Essay Writing Contest.

Around 350 essays were submitted to the contest by local sixth grade students, and seven winners were selected, six from Jennie F. Snapp Middle School and one student from Seton Catholic at All Saints.
The topic for the essay this year was: "Based on your knowledge of social studies, of past historical events, and of current media coverage (newspaper and television, answer the following question: the U.S. Postal Service has honored many individuals from presidents to singers to authors by placing their portraits on postage stamps. Whom would you nominate to honor with a postage stamp?"
All winners received a $50 Barnes & Noble gift card and had the chance to read their essay to Sertoma members during the club's "Service to Mankind Banquet" at Orlando's at En-Joie Golf Course on April 26. U-E's winners were: Isabella Carr-Perri, Rachel Chalachan, Allison Chapman, Jake Issac, Baleigh Plutino, and Jeffrey Yu. Colin Nally was the winner from All Saints.

Scott Humston's nationally-acclaimed "Pro Kids Show!" made a stop at Ann G. McGuinness Elementary School on April 30.

Humston with puppet friend "Just-a Beaver"
The live-action show uses custom music, magic, and comedy to teach students important lessons on honesty, respect, self-esteem, cooperation, and responsibility. The show has been seen by more than 1.1 million students, including visits to the White House.

An Evening of Magic ...The Class of 2014 will host "An Evening of Magic" at 7 p.m. on May 18 in the UEHS Auditorium. Alexander Boyce and the Southern Tier Magic Circle will perform. Tickets cost $5 for individuals and $20 for a family of up to five people.

U-E Chorus Boosters Flapjack Fundraiser ... The U-E Chorus Booster Club will hold a pancake fundraiser at Applebee's on the Vestal Parkway from 8 - 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 3.

U-E boys lacrosse alumni game
...The sixth annual Lakieben Brown Alumni Lacrosse Game will be played June 9 at 11 a.m. at Ty Cobb Stadium (behind U-E High School). The game raises money in Brown's honor that goes to U-E graduates. To date, over $6,200 has been raised.
The game fee is $35, which covers the cost of the t-shirt, food and drinks after the game. Equipment will be available the day of the game.

U-E girls lacrosse camp
...The girls lacrosse program will hold their annual camp for all U-E students grades 2-8 from June 25-28 at Ann G. McGuinness.
The camp will run from 9:30-11:30 a.m. each day, and the cost is $45. For more information, please check out the flyer HERE.

Students in economic classes were treated to a "Banking 101" presentation about personal finance, including the different accounts available at banks, how to write a check, balancing a checkbook, saving, and dealing with credit cards. M&T Bank Regional President Peter Newman stopped by Mr. Thomas Mullins' third period economics class.
"It's important to save money," he told the UEHS students, "but it's not a lot of fun." Students had the opportunity to ask questions after the presentation. |

UEHS Science Research and Project Lead the Way students are being honored for their hard work.

Julie, Matt, and Erin with their many awards
Julianna Makarsky has been selected to represent upstate New York at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh in May. She will be among 1,500 high school students from 65 different countries presenting at the ISEF. Julianna created a formula to reinforce concrete using non-food plant based fibers that can be grown in a wide variety of climates.
Two other UEHS seniors, Erin Makarsky and Matthew Palka, were invited to present their research projects at various events this year. Erin was awarded highest honors for her research: "A Comparative Analysis of a Natural, Established Vernal Pool to a Man-made Vernal Pool in its First Season." Her awards also include the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Award and the Office of Naval Research Naval Science Award.
Matthew was awarded as a regional poster presenter for his research: "The Effect of Lure Presentation Speed on Male Pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) Reproductive Success." Matt was invited to present his research at the Science Café in January and at a meeting of the Endicott Sertoma in February.
